I took one year of piano lessons with Dr. Xu, but during that one year, I learned and achieved so much. Dr. Xu was very patient and encouraging, and took the time to consider and recommend pieces I would enjoy learning. As an adult amateur piano learner, I have been taking piano lessons from Dr. Xu for a few years. When I started taking lessons, I did so in person, and I was on a beginner’s level. My current lessons with Dr. Xu take place using an on-line platform because I had to relocate, taking me away from the area where Dr. Xu resides. She was very flexible and creative with my instruction and developed the plan where I could continue my studies with her on-line, and for this I am extremely grateful! When I began my lessons with Dr. Xu, I was at a beginning level. She took into consideration my ability level, age and my musical preferences. She had a variety of teaching methods suggestions and after collaboration with me, decided that my skills would progress the smoothest and cohesively using the Bastien Method. This method uses scaffolding teaching methods that allowed me to build my skills and practice my skills systematically, while enjoying the song selections (most of which I knew or recognized). The book also teaches music theory, which has been so valuable for me to learn. Dr. Xu has continually demonstrated her skilled instructing style in our lessons as she has nurtured my growth as a pianist. Before this, I was trying to revive my skills after a long break from piano, but found that I had hit a wall and couldn’t progress. I found Dr. Xu online and watched some of her YouTube videos. I was very impressed with her speed and accuracy and reached out for an initial consultation. Dr. Xu teaches through an online portal designed just for her and her students. With a few webcams and a laptop, we can easily see and hear each other with high-quality sound and video. She takes detailed notes on each lesson, and publishes her notes and practice recommendations in her portal each week. I also enjoy taking practice notes through her system so that I can track my time and progress, which I compare to her notes each day. Finally, I know I’m practicing correctly and using my practice time most efficiently. The results bear that out. Though I took many years of lessons in the past, none of my former teachers compare with Dr. Xu. She’s the most accomplished and hardest-working pianist I have ever met.
